Sierra Leone Parliament Condemns Gay/Lesbian Marriage, Passes New Criminal Procedure Act
In a resolute stance against same-sex marriage, the Parliament of Sierra Leone, led by Speaker Honourable Segepon Solomon Thomas, has officially condemned the practice and assured Members of Parliament and citizens that it has no place within the country. During a committee stage on the amendment and repeal of the Criminal Procedures Act (CPA) in the Chamber of Parliament, Speaker Thomas emphasized the country's deep-rooted religious beliefs and the importance of upholding traditional values.
Addressing the gathering, Speaker Thomas stated,
"Sierra Leoneans might be poor, but its people fear and have faith in God. Therefore, our nation cannot tolerate same-sex marriage."
He went on to assert that any individuals found engaged in same-sex marriage would face legal consequences as prescribed by the law. Sierra Leone, being a country of strong religious affiliation, with Christianity and Islam as the two main religions, firmly opposes the concept of same-sex marriage, considering it irreligious, unholy, and socially unacceptable.
Building on this unified sentiment, the Parliament unanimously voted in favor of passing the Bill titled "The Criminal Procedure Act, 2024" into law. This significant development marks a major milestone in Sierra Leone's justice delivery process. The new Act, set to replace the outdated Criminal Procedure Act of 1965, has been a long-awaited reform. Efforts to review, repeal, and replace the 1965 Act were initiated over two decades ago, reflecting the country's commitment to updating its legal framework to align with evolving societal values.
President Bio, who had made the reform a key promise in his manifesto, deserves recognition for prioritizing the issue and incorporating it into the performance contract signed by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice. The Attorney General, in turn, set a clear timeline for the delivery of this crucial legislation and, with exemplary leadership, ensured its successful passage through Parliament.
Sierra Leone's resounding condemnation of same-sex marriage highlights the country's unwavering dedication to its religious principles and traditional values. As the new Criminal Procedure Act takes effect, Sierra Leone solidifies its stance against same-sex marriage, affirming its commitment to maintaining a society rooted in its deeply-held beliefs.
